Idlewild was started in 1912 by investors that thought a resort for African American vacationers would be a draw. Black newspapers and publications featured advertisements touting Idlewild as a Hunter's Paradise renowned for its beautiful lakes of pure spring water and its myriads of game fish.
Idlewild was considered a 'Safe Haven' for African Americans to escape the toxic weight of racism and segregation and simply relax. Aside from rest and relaxation, African Americans could legally own property. Following the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 business in Idlewild declined as other resorts were beginning to accommodate African American visitors, who had been living in America under legalized discrimination.
Today, generations of land holders, natives and vacationers, have banded together to vigilantly revitalize the community based on principals of equity, inclusion, and strengthening communities. A NEW generation of entrepreneurs, creatives, and academics work to write the next chapters of the 'Black Eden.' Idlewild BNB is proud to be a part of this movement.
